On Saturday, Gaza experienced one of its most lethal days since the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on October 10. Air strikes resulted in at least 21 deaths and numerous injuries across various locations in the Gaza Strip, again threatening the fragile peace established over a month ago.
Gaza's civil defense reported attacks in multiple neighborhoods. Central Gaza's Nuseirat area saw seven fatalities and over 16 injuries when a residential building was targeted. In the Al-Nasr district of western Gaza City, four individuals lost their lives due to an assault on an apartment complex. The initial strike hit a vehicle in Al-Rimal, killing five instantly. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as bystanders, including children, rushed to salvage food scattered from the wreck.
The Israeli military stated the airstrikes were a reaction to an earlier incident where one armed individual crossed into Israeli-held territory and opened fire on their troops. This site is often used for humanitarian aid deliveries. Following this, Israel reported targeting what they termed “terror sites” within Gaza.
Israel's prime minister's office has accused Hamas of violating the truce by orchestrating the armed incursion. Officials claim they have adhered to the ceasefire, insisting that Hamas has repeatedly breached this agreement.
Conversely, Hamas refuted any violation, suggesting that Israel is undermining the ceasefire through escalated military actions. They urged international mediators to intervene promptly to stop the assaults, warning that increasing violence jeopardizes the fragile agreement.
This marks another instance of escalating tensions since the ceasefire began, following a prior incident that resulted in 27 deaths in Gaza. Health authorities have reported over 300 casualties due to Israeli attacks during the ceasefire period.
The ongoing conflict flared significantly after Hamas's large-scale attack on October 7, 2023, which caused over 1,200 fatalities in Israel, leading to devastating retaliatory assaults in Gaza resulting in tens of thousands of deaths.
Saturday's events underscore the continuing fragility of the ceasefire, with both factions blaming each other. With escalating tensions, mediators are under increasing pressure to ensure the stability of the truce and prevent its complete collapse.
