More than a year after Gladiator II hit theaters, Russell Crowe remains critical of the sequel, questioning whether it captured what made the 2000 original a cinematic classic. The actor, who earned an Oscar for his role as Maximus, said the follow-up failed to understand the moral core that defined the first film.
In an interview with Australia’s Triple J radio, Crowe explained that the creative team “did not actually understand what made the first one special.” He added that he was already uneasy about the idea of a sequel, as his character had died in the original story, leaving him no say in how it was developed.
Crowe emphasized that Gladiator’s success was never about its grand set pieces or action scenes. “It wasn’t the pomp. It wasn’t the circumstance. It wasn’t the action,” he said. “It was the moral core.”
He also recalled protecting Maximus’ integrity during the original production, opposing suggestions that the character engage in extra romantic relationships. Crowe argued that such storylines would betray Maximus’ loyalty to his murdered wife and child. “You’re taking away his power,” he said. “So, at the same time he had this relationship with his wife, he was f***ing this other girl? What are you talking about? It’s crazy.”
The actor expressed particular disappointment over a plot twist in the sequel that reveals Maximus fathered an illegitimate son with Lucilla, played by Connie Nielsen. Paul Mescal’s character, Lucius, is presented as Maximus’ child, which Crowe believes undermines the emotional core of his character.
Gladiator II, starring Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Nielsen, received mixed reviews upon its November 2024 release. It earned over $462 million worldwide—strong but slightly below the original’s $465 million—and received only one Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design.
Crowe revealed that fans reached out to him after the release, expressing their disappointment. “Women in Europe… would come talk to me and complain,” he said. “And I’d say, ‘Hey, it wasn’t me! I didn’t do it.’”
Screenwriter David Scarpa previously noted that making a sequel meant navigating audiences’ deep attachment to the original film, highlighting just how cherished Gladiator remains more than two decades later.
