A significant fire erupted on a container ship anchored at the Port of Los Angeles on Friday night, triggering an extensive emergency response. Firefighters quickly arrived at the location to battle the flames, which initially ignited below deck and eventually spread across several levels of the vessel. A mid-deck explosion was noted, with the cause still under investigation.
All 23 personnel aboard the ship have been safely accounted for, with no injuries reported. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) confirmed that the incident was caused by an electrical malfunction beneath the ship’s deck. Given that the vessel is carrying hazardous materials, LAFD’s Hazardous Materials teams are closely monitoring air quality in the vicinity for safety.
The ship, identified as One Henry Hudson, measures 1,102 feet (336 meters) and is operated by One Ocean Express, a shipping line based in Singapore. Prior to its arrival in Los Angeles, the vessel made several stops in Japan, including the ports of Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo. Authorities continue to investigate the fire's origin, as well as any potential link between the hazardous cargo and its severity.
By around 7 pm local time, the fire had worsened, spreading through multiple levels of the ship. More than 100 firefighters, along with specialized units, were working diligently on fire suppression. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass highlighted the magnitude of the emergency and assured that all safety measures to protect nearby residents and port workers were being implemented.
The Port of Los Angeles is North America's busiest port, managing millions of containers annually. The incident involving the One Henry Hudson has temporarily disrupted operations and may impact regional shipping and logistics. Investigators and fire officials are collecting evidence to understand how the fire ignited and if preventative measures could have been taken.
The LAFD is collaborating with port authorities and the shipping firm to ensure firefighting efforts are effective while minimizing environmental risks posed by the ship's cargo. The public has been advised to stay clear of the area until the situation is fully resolved.
One Ocean Express has not yet released an official comment on the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and updates are anticipated as new information is made available.
