As India’s T20I captain, Suryakumar Yadav is facing increasing scrutiny amid his ongoing batting struggles. The right-handed batsman has yet to register a half-century over his last 20 T20I innings, raising alarm bells regarding his performance at a pivotal time for the national team.
Since late last year, Suryakumar has only accumulated 227 runs, with a concerning average of 13.35. This slump has stretched into India's current five-match home series against South Africa, where he managed just 12 runs in the first match and a mere five in the second.
In response to Suryakumar's continuing struggle, former India opener Aakash Chopra emphasized the necessity for the captain to set an example through his batting. He remarked that leadership in modern T20 cricket transcends tactical decisions and requires steady performances, particularly from top-order batsmen.
Chopra pointed out that an extended period of low scores can undermine not only an individual’s confidence but also the overall team dynamic. He stressed that even though tactical abilities are crucial, a top-four batter’s main duty is to score runs.
Importantly, the former cricketer made it clear that his statements were not a critique of Suryakumar's leadership qualities. Instead, he highlighted the urgency for the Indian skipper to restore his batting rhythm and confidence as the T20 World Cup 2026 approaches.
With the tournament scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka early next year, Chopra underscored that consistent contributions from established players will be essential. He noted that both Suryakumar Yadav and vice-captain Shubman Gill need to regain their form and rhythm well in advance of the marquee event to secure a solid foundation for India.
