CIA Director John Ratcliffe reportedly travelled to Moscow this week with a warning for Russia against any potential attack on countries belonging to NATO. US media reports said the unusual visit came amid growing concerns within US intelligence circles that Moscow could attempt to test the alliance's response. The Wall Street Journal and CBS News reported that Ratcliffe's discussions were aimed at discouraging Russia from considering military action against NATO members.

Concerns Over NATO’s Security

According to the reports, US intelligence assessments suggest Russia could potentially challenge the alliance in the coming years. He described the Moscow visit as largely routine and said the United States wanted to see the conflict in Ukraine come to an end. Ratcliffe's visit makes him one of the most senior US officials to travel to Russia since the beginning of the Ukraine war in 2022.

The Moscow visit took place as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continued and Russian attacks intensified during the summer. Peace efforts supported by the United States have faced difficulties, while the civilian death toll has continued to rise. The CIA chief's discussions reportedly included the ongoing Russia Ukraine War, although details of the talks have not been publicly disclosed.

Iran and Strait of Hormuz Also Raised

CBS News also reported that Ratcliffe discussed the situation involving Iran during his Moscow contacts. The report said additional sanctions could be considered if shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz does not resume. The Kremlin acknowledged that Ratcliffe had held contacts with Russian intelligence officials. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the CIA director did not meet President Vladimir Putin. Peskov described communication through intelligence channels as potentially useful but did not provide details about the subjects discussed. He also said it was too early to determine whether the contacts would influence wider relations between Washington and Moscow.
