China Gives $2.8M Aid to Thailand After Fatal High-Speed Rail Accident

China Gives $2.8M Aid to Thailand After Fatal High-Speed Rail Accident

Post by : Meena Ariff

In a high-level meeting at Government House on Thursday, Chinese Ambassador to Thailand Zhang Jianwei officially handed over 20 million yuan ($2.8 million) in humanitarian aid to Thailand, following the recent deadly crane collapse on the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Nakhon Ratchasima.

The aid package included 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) in cash and an equal value in relief supplies, which were received by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Prime Minister Anutin expressed heartfelt thanks, calling the gesture a symbol of the “brotherly bond” and long-standing trust between Thailand and China.

Ambassador Zhang extended Beijing’s deepest condolences over the tragedy, in which a construction crane fell onto a passenger train, causing multiple casualties. He confirmed that Chinese authorities had issued strict instructions to the companies involved to fully cooperate with Thai investigators and ensure transparency.

The ambassador also emphasized that the high-speed rail project remains a key element of the Thailand-China strategic partnership, noting that safety measures are now a top priority for all parties.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss broader economic cooperation. Prime Minister Anutin urged China to accelerate the purchase of 500,000 tonnes of Thai rice, a deal previously agreed with President Xi Jinping. Ambassador Zhang responded positively, assuring that China intends to meet the import targets within the year.

Tourism was another key topic, with both leaders committing to measures that will increase Chinese visitors to Thailand, supporting the country’s economic recovery and growth.

The discussions highlighted both nations’ resolve to deepen ties, maintain project safety, and expand trade and tourism collaboration, even amid the aftermath of the recent disaster.
