In a significant move against underground Christian entities, Chinese authorities have detained 18 senior leaders of the Beijing Zion Church. This operation marks one of the most extensive crackdowns on unregistered religious groups seen in recent times, with these individuals apprehended since early October.
Government officials have leveled accusations against them for “illegally utilizing information networks,” a charge that could result in prison sentences of up to three years. Advocacy groups contend this allegation is increasingly wielded to silence non-compliant Christian leaders who refuse to adhere to the ruling party's mandates.
The extensive operation commenced on October 9, when law enforcement in Beihai, Guangxi initiated coordinated actions across multiple provinces. In just a few days, renowned pastor Mingri “Ezra” Jin, along with nearly 30 pastors, ministers, and church members, were detained in regions spanning Shanghai to Hainan.
While some detainees were held for weeks, at least four have since been granted bail. One relative of a detainee has also faced questions. According to Chinese legislation, suspects cannot be held for more than 37 days without an official arrest, which has now been confirmed for the 18 church leaders.
Christian advocacy organizations assert that these arrests reflect a growing campaign to dismantle independent churches operating beyond state-sanctioned frameworks. They view these latest detentions as an effort to compel churches into compliance with government oversight.
Pastor Jin founded the Zion Church in 2007, which expanded to nearly 5,000 members across about 50 cities. The church's physical facilities were shut down in 2018, prompting its members to continue congregating online. However, recent regulations now restrict all online religious content lacking official approval.
Advocates for rights maintain that the arrested leaders merely sought to practice their faith and foster an independent church community. International organizations have also voiced concerns, calling for transparency and fair treatment for those detained.
