In a significant development that has rocked the Punjab Police department, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has detained Deputy Inspector General Harcharan Singh Bhullar as part of a major bribery investigation. The 2009-batch IPS officer was apprehended at his Chandigarh office following a successful setup after a bribery complaint emerged. Along with him, a private individual, allegedly acting as a middleman, was also taken into custody.
The corruption case unfolded when a complainant brought allegations to the CBI, claiming that Bhullar sought monetary compensation via an intermediary in exchange for settling an FIR against him. Responding swiftly, the CBI orchestrated a trap operation, capturing the accused in the act of accepting bribe payments. This arrest represents a significant milestone in recent CBI operations concerning police corruption.
Post-arrest, the CBI conducted thorough searches at multiple properties tied to Harcharan Singh Bhullar in both Punjab and Chandigarh. Reports indicate the agency seized over ₹5 crore in cash, 1.5 kilograms of gold jewelry, property documents, luxury goods, as well as arms and ammunition. Investigators characterized the haul as “substantial and incriminating,” bolstering the ongoing corruption case against the senior officer.
CBI insiders noted that the extensive recovery of assets has raised eyebrows regarding Bhullar's financial dealings and potential abuse of his authority. The recovered documentation suggests he may hold several high-value properties throughout Punjab. As inquiries continue, the CBI is anticipated to deepen the investigation to uncover a possible wider network of corruption linked to Bhullar.
The situation has generated considerable concern within the law enforcement sector, with many lamenting it as a “significant blemish” on the integrity of the police force. Senior officials reaffirmed the CBI's commitment to transparency and accountability at every level. The arrest of Harcharan Singh Bhullar once more emphasizes the agency's resolve to confront corruption, irrespective of the involved individual's rank.
As Harcharan Singh Bhullar remains in CBI custody for questioning, further investigations are poised to reveal the full extent of his alleged misconduct. This case has captured national interest, not only for the substantial financial recovery but also due to the involvement of a senior police officer expected to uphold the law. Authorities have suggested that additional arrests may occur as the investigation into one of Punjab's most shocking corruption cases continues.
