In a significant blow to the tennis community, Carlos Alcaraz has announced his withdrawal from the 2026 French Open, citing a right wrist injury that prevents him from defending his title.
The young Spanish athlete confirmed the news on Friday after medical evaluations indicated tendon inflammation and cartilage damage in his wrist, an issue that surfaced during this month's Barcelona Open and has since deteriorated.
With the endorsement of his medical team, Alcaraz has opted to focus on recovery rather than risk exacerbating his injury. Consequently, he will also forgo participation in the Italian Open, effectively ending his engagement in the entire clay-court season at a competitive level.
In a statement released on X, Alcaraz described the decision as tough but necessary. He emphasized that his priority is now his rehabilitation and ongoing assessment before determining a comeback date. He conveyed optimism about returning stronger than ever.
Organizers of Roland-Garros expressed their heartfelt sentiments regarding Alcaraz’s situation, wishing the two-time defending champion a swift recovery and acknowledging his absence will be felt this year.
Alcaraz's withdrawal will have profound implications for the ATP rankings. As the defending titleholder in both Rome and Paris, he stands to lose approximately 3,000 ranking points, likely reshaping the leaderboard in the upcoming weeks.
At just 21 years old, Alcaraz was seeking to secure a third consecutive title at the French Open, having claimed victories in 2024 and 2025. His 2025 championship match against Jannik Sinner, where he saved three championship points in a marathon lasting over five and a half hours, is already celebrated as one of the greatest finals in the tournament's history.
With Alcaraz sidelined, attention now turns to world No. 1 Sinner and Alexander Zverev, both of whom stand to gain significant opportunities on clay this season.
Nonetheless, the absence of the reigning champion will create a noticeable void, transforming this year’s French Open into a markedly different event.
