The Canadian government, in partnership with Saskatchewan, has unveiled a significant investment exceeding $25.9 million aimed at enhancing infrastructure to facilitate housing development throughout the province. This funding will specifically target critical services like water management, wastewater systems, and waste handling to expedite the building of new residential units.
The announcement featured key figures such as Buckley Belanger and Eric Schmalz, along with local officials like Chad Bachynski and James Murdock. The funding is part of the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF).
According to officials, this investment will enable the construction of approximately 29,370 housing units across Regina, Saskatoon, and Moose Jaw, helping to meet the increasing housing demand in these urban areas.
In Regina, the Taylor Field redevelopment initiative will benefit from upgraded water and stormwater systems, playing a crucial role in supporting new housing development on the former stadium site.
In Saskatoon, part of the funding will enhance the city’s Material Recovery Centre, promoting better waste management by increasing recycling capabilities and minimizing landfill dependency. This upgrade will also assist in managing construction waste amid the rise of new housing projects.
Meanwhile, the Spring Creek Stormwater Management Project in Moose Jaw will concentrate on improving drainage to mitigate flooding risks while bolstering housing growth. This includes the replacement of pipes, upgrading roads, and fortifying infrastructure to help the community withstand climate-related challenges.
Government representatives emphasize that these infrastructure upgrades are vital in addressing Canada’s housing crisis. By equipping cities with essential systems, the construction process can be more efficient and swift. This investment also fits into wider federal initiatives aimed at producing affordable housing and stimulating the construction industry.
The collaborative efforts highlighted by the leaders reflect the importance of federal, provincial, and municipal cooperation in establishing stronger communities, generating employment, and fostering sustainable urban growth.
Ultimately, this investment is poised to not only boost housing availability but also enhance living standards and promote long-term economic growth throughout Saskatchewan.
