In a poignant statement marking Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day, Canada is reminded of the vital need for remembrance, unity, and a renewed determination to combat hatred. Delivered by Marc Miller, the message underlines the significance of honoring the millions lost during one of history’s most harrowing periods.
Miller highlighted the tragic loss of over six million Jewish lives due to Nazi Germany, alongside countless Roma and other marginalized groups, including individuals with disabilities, who faced persecution during the atrocities of World War II. He emphasized that acknowledging these victims serves not just as a reflection of the past, but as a commitment to prevent history from repeating itself.
The minister characterized Yom HaShoah as a crucial moment for introspection and learning. He drew attention to the vital role played by memorial establishments like the National Holocaust Monument, Toronto Holocaust Museum, and Montreal Holocaust Museum. These institutions are essential in keeping survivor stories alive and in teaching future generations about the perils of hatred and bigotry.
Miller's address also confronted the alarming rise of antisemitism, both in Canada and globally. He reaffirmed the government’s staunch opposition to all forms of antisemitism, including Holocaust denial and hate speech. He urged communities to stay alert, recognize harmful rhetoric, and collectively work towards fostering safer, inclusive spaces for all.
The minister further pointed out ongoing governmental initiatives stemming from the National Forum on Combatting Antisemitism, including collaboration with law enforcement, community leaders, and various governmental levels to prevent hate crimes effectively. Safeguarding Jewish communities' rights to express their collective identity, culture, and faith continues to be a priority.
In closing, Miller appealed to Canadians to support survivors and their families. He reminded everyone that remembering the atrocities of the past comes with the responsibility to cultivate a more respectful, understanding, and dignified future for all.
