Cambodia’s monarch, Norodom Sihamoni, has announced that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and is currently undergoing treatment in China. The revelation came through an official statement released on April 10, 2026.
The 72-year-old king stated that the diagnosis was made during a routine medical examination in Beijing, where he had traveled along with his mother, Norodom Monineath, for regular health checkups.
While confirming the diagnosis, the king did not provide details about the severity of his condition. Medical experts note that prostate cancer is often treatable, especially when detected at an early stage.
The announcement has drawn attention to the king’s health, although his role in governance remains largely ceremonial. Cambodia’s monarchy functions within a constitutional framework, with the king serving as a symbolic national figure.
King Sihamoni succeeded his father, Norodom Sihanouk, in October 2004 following his abdication. His father had also been treated in China for prostate cancer and lived until the age of 89.
Before ascending the throne, Sihamoni served as Cambodia’s ambassador to UNESCO and was widely recognized for his work as a classical ballet dancer.
The royal family has not indicated any immediate changes in official duties. Observers note that the king maintains a low public profile and remains unmarried, with no direct heirs.
