Calgary Braces for Extended Periods of Heavy Rain

Calgary Braces for Extended Periods of Heavy Rain

Post by : Shweta

Calgary is currently enduring significant rainfall, and meteorologists are forecasting several more days of wet weather as a robust system sweeps across southern Alberta. Officials warn that rainfall may persist through Monday and Tuesday, increasing worries about rising river levels and potential flooding.

Environment Canada has put out rainfall alerts for Calgary and nearby regions, with predictions of 50 to 100 millimeters of rain expected over the coming days. Some areas may see even greater totals, which could lead to pooling on roads and flooding in vulnerable spots.

City management is actively monitoring the situation as rainfall persists. River levels in Calgary are set to rise through Tuesday due to the heavy downpour combined with melting snow from the Rockies. While widespread flooding is not yet anticipated, officials are prepared for any potential escalation.

The Bow and Elbow rivers are already showing stronger flows than usual. Experts have advised locals to steer clear of riverbanks, inundated pathways, and swift currents, noting that some pathways may temporarily close if water levels increase further. Boating advisories have also been issued, warning that conditions may become hazardous.

This storm system is drawing significant moisture into southern Alberta, with rain beginning over the weekend and expected to last well into Monday and Tuesday. Some predictions indicate that Calgary could receive almost a month’s worth of rain within just a few days, intensified by possible thunderstorms.

The present scenario evokes memories of the catastrophic flood in Calgary in 2013, one of Canada's costliest natural disasters. While officials caution that this forecast doesn’t indicate a disaster of similar magnitude, many residents remain vigilant, discussing river levels and rainfall on community forums.

Emergency management teams are advising residents to stay informed and vigilant. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads, as well as to watch for potential washouts near waterways and bridges.

The City of Calgary has initiated several precautionary measures, including managing the water levels in the Glenmore Reservoir to accommodate incoming rainfall. Safety crews are on standby, monitoring drainage systems and river conditions continuously.

While meteorologists expect the rain to lessen later in the week, Calgary stays under scrutiny as this significant weather event expands. With additional rain anticipated through Tuesday, officials are encouraging residents to remain cautious, avoid risks near body waters, and prepare for sudden changes in conditions.
