During a recent session in the Australian Parliament, Senator Pauline Hanson was suspended for one week after appearing in a burka. Her action aimed to underscore her push for a ban on full-face coverings in public, a long-standing agenda of hers.
Hanson, a Queensland representative and member of the anti-immigration One Nation party, wore the black burka as a protest after her bill to prohibit full face coverings was thwarted by her colleagues. This marks the second occasion she has used the burka in parliament to draw attention to her cause, the first being in 2017.
The stunt was met with widespread backlash from other parliamentarians. Senator Mehreen Faruqi, a Muslim member of the Greens, labeled the act as “blatant racism,” while Independent Senator Fatima Payman condemned the protest as “disgraceful.” Additionally, Penny Wong, the Australian Foreign Minister and Senate leader, criticized Hanson sharply, proposing a motion to censure her, which passed overwhelmingly, with 55 votes for and only 5 against.
The motion declared Hanson’s actions as mocking and derogatory towards individuals based on their religion, demonstrating a deep disrespect for Muslim Australians. Wong also asserted that such behavior rendered Hanson unfit for her senatorial role.
Hanson responded on Facebook, insisting, “If they don’t want me wearing it – ban the burka,” further emphasizing her position on the matter.
Her political history has been rife with controversy, particularly surrounding immigration and multicultural themes. In 2016, she sparked uproar with a speech claiming Australia risked being “swamped by Muslims,” echoing sentiments from her 1996 inaugural speech which raised fears about the country being “swamped by Asians.”
This latest incident has reignited discussions on religious freedom, cultural sensitivity, and the limits of political demonstrations in Australia. Senator Hanson’s suspension reflects the significant opposition she faces in parliament for actions many consider divisive and disrespectful.
