UAE's Innovative Initiative for Sign Language Education

UAE's Innovative Initiative for Sign Language Education

Post by : Badri Ariffin

Emirates College for Advanced Education has partnered with the Zayed Authority for People of Determination to enhance educational opportunities, training, and rehabilitation for People of Determination throughout the UAE.

This collaboration focuses on creating tailored professional programs, improving system standards, advancing scientific research, and nurturing national talent in special education and rehabilitation. Both entities emphasized that this agreement aligns with the UAE’s mission to foster an inclusive and sustainable society, offering equal chances for everyone.

In line with the agreement, the partners will co-create specialized training programs that adhere to the National Qualifications Centre's standards and cater to the needs of People of Determination. The initiative also aims to introduce standardized assessment methods for evaluating the professional and technical capabilities of educators and specialists in the field.

Key components of the agreement entail delivering accredited training programs and facilitating practical opportunities for People of Determination within recognized educational tracks. Furthermore, it includes sharing expertise regarding educational evaluation and quality assurance.

Emirates College for Advanced Education is committed to equipping People of Determination for the job market through annual workshops and programs that emphasize adaptive learning and inclusive educational strategies.

His Excellency Abdullah Ismail Al Kamali, Executive Director of the People of Determination Sector at Zayed Authority, remarked that this collaboration represents an essential step in developing a comprehensive educational and rehabilitation framework premised on innovation, quality, and robust partnerships.

He highlighted the importance of enhanced cooperation between educational institutions and rehabilitation services to cultivate specialized national professionals and generate research-oriented training programs that reflect labor market requirements.

Dr. May Laith Al Taee, Director of Emirates College, stated that the partnership is instrumental in realizing the UAE leadership’s vision for inclusive education and building a future-ready system catering to all learners.

Dr. Al Taee added that the college will actively collaborate with its partners to equip educators and specialists with modern, research-driven teaching techniques and educational technologies tailored to better serve People of Determination.

A significant aspect of this agreement is the introduction of the UAE’s inaugural Level 4 Professional Diploma in Sign Language Interpretation, aimed at preparing certified interpreters according to international industry standards.

Graduates of this diploma will receive licenses from relevant UAE authorities, enabling them to work across various sectors, thereby enhancing dedicated services for the deaf community. The initiative also aids preparations for hosting the World Congress of the Deaf in Abu Dhabi in 2027.

Additionally, the partnership encompasses a joint mentoring scheme to share best practices in special education. Both parties will collaborate on preparing qualified professionals in education and rehabilitation and promote Emiratisation through collaborative academic and training initiatives.

The partnership will also facilitate field training and job placements for graduates, while advocating for existing specialists from the authority to pursue postgraduate studies at Emirates College.

This agreement further supports joint research projects focusing on People of Determination, covering their rights, living conditions, sensory disabilities, and teaching methods. Findings from these studies will be vital in refining educational programs, rehabilitation services, and professional practices in special education.

Officials emphasize that this collaboration showcases both organizations’ dedication to long-term partnerships, reinforcing the UAE’s status as a global leader in inclusion, education, and empowerment for People of Determination.
