A significant shift occurred in Bihar's political scene on Saturday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) opted to suspend former Union Minister R K Singh and BJP MLC Ashok Agarwal due to supposed anti-party actions. This decision came just a day after the party claimed the title of largest party in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections by securing 89 seats.
Official communications to the leaders indicated that the suspensions were initiated due to ongoing cross-party commentary and activities seen as detrimental to party integrity. R K Singh, a former MP from Arrah, and Agarwal now have a week to formally articulate their positions to party leadership.
The suspensions are tied to their conduct during the recent Bihar elections. In October, prior to polling, Singh took to Facebook urging voters to avoid candidates with criminal histories, explicitly naming several NDA members, including JD(U)’s Anant Singh and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. Insiders suggest that Singh's public critique of party colleagues has led to this disciplinary action.
The letter sent to Singh stated: “Your conduct is contrary to the party's principles and constitutes a breach of party discipline. This serious matter has adversely affected the party. Consequently, you are being suspended and must clarify why you shouldn't face expulsion. You are required to respond within one week of this notice.”
The BJP's decisive action reflects its commitment to maintaining internal order, especially following its notable victory in Bihar. Analysts emphasize the importance of managing dissent and preserving unity within the organization as significant challenges despite electoral success.
Agarwal is facing similar allegations regarding his conduct, though specific incidents have not been disclosed. The forthcoming week will be crucial, as the decisions of both leaders may shape their political futures within the party.
The timing of this suspension is critical, as the BJP seeks to strengthen its hold in Bihar and manage relationships within the NDA. The swift response suggests a strict stance towards public dissent from senior members, aiming to avoid any distractions from the accomplishments in the elections.
In the coming days, the party will observe whether Singh and Agarwal heed the request to comply or choose to escalate the situation, which could potentially affect the BJP's stability in the state.
