A BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh has strongly criticized actor Shah Rukh Khan after his IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, bought Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman for Rs 9.2 crore.
Sangeet Som, a former member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, called Shah Rukh Khan a "traitor" for signing the Bangladeshi player amid reports of increasing violence and atrocities against Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a public event in Meerut, Som said, "On one hand, Hindus are being killed in Bangladesh, and on the other hand, cricketers are being bought for the IPL. The traitorous film actor Shah Rukh Khan has bought Mustafizur Rahman. Such traitors have no right to live in this country."
He added, "The people of India have helped you reach this position. If you get money, it is from this country. But you have betrayed your own country."
Som further warned that players like Rahman would face difficulties in India, saying they "will not be able to step out of the airport" when they come to play in the IPL, which is scheduled to begin in March.
Spiritual leader Devkinandan Thakur also criticized Shah Rukh Khan’s decision and asked KKR management not to play the Bangladeshi player in the team.
"Devotees of Sanatan and Hindus who made Shah Rukh Khan a star see that he has ignored the killings and assaults on Hindus in Bangladesh and still included Bangladeshi players in his team," Thakur said.
The opposition in Uttar Pradesh also reacted to the controversy. Leader of the opposition in the state assembly, Mata Prasad Pandey, condemned Som’s remarks and targeted the BJP. Congress leader Surender Rajput called the BJP a "traitor party" and accused it of targeting Shah Rukh Khan because he is Muslim.
BJP ally and UP minister Om Prakash Rajbhar criticized Som for making such statements just to gain attention.
This exchange of words comes amid tense relations between India and Bangladesh, which worsened after the lynching and burning of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man, in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district last month over alleged blasphemy.
