Bill Gates withdrew from the India AI Impact Summit just hours before his scheduled keynote address, dealing a setback to an event already facing criticism over poor organisation. His absence, followed by the cancellation of another high-profile speaker, added to a troubled start for the summit in New Delhi.
The summit was positioned as the first major artificial intelligence forum in the Global South, aimed at showcasing India’s growing role in global AI governance. However, Gates’ foundation said he chose to step back to ensure the focus remained on the summit’s core objectives, despite earlier confirmations of his attendance.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the gathering, stressing the importance of child safety on AI platforms. Global tech leaders, including CEOs from major AI companies, were present, highlighting India’s ambitions in the artificial intelligence sector.
Despite announcements of large investment pledges in AI infrastructure by Indian conglomerates and global firms, the event was overshadowed by complaints from attendees. Issues ranged from sudden closure of exhibition halls to traffic disruptions caused by road closures for VIP movements.
Opposition leaders and participants criticised the government over the lack of planning, saying the chaos undermined India’s image as a technology hub. While authorities issued apologies for the inconvenience, the organisational lapses dominated discussions around what was meant to be a landmark AI summit.
