PATNA – As Bihar gears up for the first phase of voting in the 2025 state elections, cracks within the opposition are becoming increasingly visible. The Grand Alliance, comprising the RJD, Congress, CPI, and Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP), is struggling to maintain unity, as multiple constituencies witness direct clashes between alliance members. Political analysts say this disarray could hand the BJP-led NDA a critical advantage, especially in high-stakes seats where vote splitting is expected.
The RJD and Congress are set to face off in six key constituencies, including Vaishali, Sikandra, Kahalgaon, Sultanganj, Narkatiaganj, and Warsaliganj, while the CPI and Congress are in direct contest in Bachhwara, Rajapakar, Bihar Sharif, and Karghar. VIP and RJD are clashing in Chainpur and Babubarhi. These internal battles within the Grand Alliance underscore the ongoing seat-sharing conflicts that have plagued the bloc ahead of the Bihar polls. Analysts highlight that such opposition disunity could fragment votes and reduce the overall effectiveness of the alliance in crucial constituencies.
The RJD released a list of 143 candidates on Monday, revealing overlapping nominations with Congress in several seats, inflaming tensions within the coalition. The opposition’s inability to finalize its seat-sharing arrangement has left voters and party workers uncertain, increasing the political advantage for the NDA. Observers note that the Bihar polls, with multiple first-phase constituencies affected by opposition clashes, could see a significant swing toward BJP-led candidates due to fragmented votes and internal discord in the Grand Alliance.
Adding to the complexity is the political feud in Mahua, where RJD fielded Mukesh Raushan against Tej Pratap Yadav, estranged son of Lalu Prasad Yadav, who now heads Janshakti Janata Dal. Analysts say family feuds and intra-alliance clashes in Bihar can have broader electoral implications, potentially weakening the opposition’s performance across other constituencies. The internal struggle has become a talking point for parties like the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), led by Chirag Paswan, who emphasized that the Grand Alliance’s discord has given the NDA a clear advantage in multiple “challenging seats.”
Political experts suggest that the Bihar polls could see the NDA consolidating its position in key regions due to the ongoing infighting in the opposition. With the first-phase voting just weeks away, opposition parties need urgent coordination to prevent vote division. The unfolding scenario demonstrates how internal disunity within alliances can influence voter perception and electoral outcomes, ultimately reshaping Bihar’s political landscape.
