On Sunday afternoon, Bhutan was hit by an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). This tremor occurred at 2:42 PM Indian Standard Time on November 23, 2025, with its epicenter located at latitude 27.36 N and longitude 91.39 E, at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The NCS promptly updated the public via social media regarding the event, which is a reminder of the seismic activity prevalent in the region. Notably, Bhutan experienced another quake of 3.1 magnitude in October, highlighting ongoing geological concerns.
Positioned within the young Himalayan Mountains, Bhutan is in a particularly seismic zone. According to the Indian Seismic Code, it falls under zones IV and V, characterized by high earthquake occurrences. This places Bhutan at a significant risk for seismic events, underscoring the importance of disaster readiness.
Shallow seismic events, like the one on Sunday, can result in more considerable damage compared to deeper earthquakes due to their proximity to the surface, leading to stronger shaking. Fortunately, no significant damage or injuries have been reported following this recent quake.
Apart from seismic activity, Bhutan also contends with various natural hazards. Climate change has raised the likelihood of Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) as water can suddenly burst through glacier barriers. The country has also faced seasonal strong winds that have damaged rural homes during storms in 2011 and 2013. Other frequent natural disasters include landslides, flash floods, and forest fires, which have taken lives and caused property damage.
In light of this recent quake, Bhutan’s government and disaster management teams are vigilant in monitoring geological activity to protect citizens. This event serves as a critical reminder of the continuous need for preparedness in a region prone to earthquakes.
Residents are urged to remain aware of safety protocols and heed guidance from local authorities during emergencies. Tools such as the BhooKamp App offer real-time earthquake updates, assisting individuals in staying informed during seismic activities.
Ultimately, Bhutan's geographical position in the Himalayas ensures ongoing susceptibility to seismic and other natural threats, rendering effective disaster preparedness and early warning systems essential for safeguarding lives and properties.
