A deeply unsettling incident has emerged from Bengaluru, where a respected surgeon has been detained for purportedly taking the life of his wife—a fellow physician—by administering an excessive dose of the potent anaesthetic drug, Propofol. Initially ruled as an unnatural death, forensic investigations have shifted the narrative towards murder after confirming lethal substances in the victim's system.
The tragic events unfolded on April 21 at the couple's home in the Munnekollal area of East Bengaluru. Dr. Mahendra Reddy, who practices as a general surgeon at Victoria Hospital, allegedly injected his wife, Dr. Kruthika Reddy, with Propofol. Shortly after the drug was administered, she showed signs of distress. Despite her husband's urgent attempt to get her to a nearby private hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. The couple had been married for under a year, having wed on May 26, 2024, and were recognized as accomplished medical practitioners.
Initially classified as an unnatural death by the Marathahalli Police, investigators began standard procedures including evidence collection from the residence. However, several anomalies at the scene raised suspicions among officers. A Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) retrieved crucial medical items such as a cannula set, an injection tube, and used syringes, which were subsequently sealed and sent for forensic examination. Viscera samples were also obtained from the deceased to ascertain the cause of death.
Weeks later, the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report revealed significant findings, confirming the presence of Propofol—a strong anaesthetic used to induce unconsciousness during surgical procedures. The report determined that the amount detected in Dr. Kruthika's system indicated a deliberate overdose rather than an accident. This revelation transformed the investigation, reframing the case from an unexplained death to a calculated murder executed with medical expertise.
With the FSL's confirmation, Dr. Kruthika's father filed a formal complaint on October 13, accusing his son-in-law of intentional homicide. The Marathahalli Police department swiftly initiated a search operation, apprehending Dr. Mahendra Reddy in Manipal, a prominent university town, on October 14. He has since been returned to Bengaluru for questioning and is currently in police custody.
During a press conference, Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh detailed the evidence that implicated the husband in this series of events. He stated, “Evidence collected thus far strongly points to the husband’s involvement in this crime. He presented her as being unwell but neglected to disclose any suspicious circumstances leading to his wife's condition. Our findings indicate malicious intent, and our investigation is ongoing.” Authorities suspect that Dr. Reddy exploited his medical knowledge to mask the true nature of the death, potentially to evade suspicion. Investigators are also looking into whether any prior conflicts existed between the couple.
This shocking incident has reverberated throughout Bengaluru's medical community, where the couple were well-regarded. Colleagues at Victoria Hospital have expressed profound shock and sorrow. A senior doctor, wishing to remain anonymous, remarked, “Both were exceptionally talented individuals with bright futures ahead of them. It’s heartbreaking that such potential has been extinguished in this manner.”
The use of Propofol—a tightly regulated anaesthetic—in this case has raised pressing concerns regarding access and potential abuse within the medical field. Known for its effectiveness in surgical contexts, it can have fatal outcomes when misapplied. Medical experts have urged that Propofol be strictly monitored in clinical settings, highlighting that misuse can lead to rapid respiratory failure and cardiac arrest. This case starkly illustrates the urgent need for more stringent regulations governing medical substances.
Investigative efforts continue as police scrutinize the accused's statements, along with digital and phone records to unpack the events leading to the wife's death. They are also investigating any financial or personal conflicts that may have provoked the alleged act of violence. The accused is undergoing questioning to ascertain if he acted independently or received outside assistance. Authorities await further forensic analyses and call logs to solidify the evidence before filing a comprehensive chargesheet.
Public reaction has been one of outrage, with citizens and women's rights advocates calling for a thorough and transparent inquiry into the case. Social media has seen an outpouring of tributes to Dr. Kruthika and demands for justice under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, addressing murder. Meanwhile, legal commentators note that the criminal use of medical drugs adds a grave dimension to the case, as it constitutes a violation of professional ethics and an abuse of medical knowledge.
The unfortunate demise of Dr. Kruthika Reddy has plunged the city into grief. What began as a puzzling medical crisis has rapidly evolved into a suspected murder case that uncovers the disturbing realities of personal discord within the medical profession. As investigations progress, the residents of Bengaluru and the medical fraternity at large seek justice for the young dermatologist whose life was prematurely taken in such tragic and bewildering circumstances.
