David Beckham, co-owner of Inter Miami CF, has called for patience in light of head coach Javier Mascherano's surprise resignation, indicating that the club will take the necessary time to find a suitable replacement.
Mascherano's resignation was announced earlier this week, attributed to personal reasons, right after a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls. Reports suggest the decision was made over the weekend, leaving the club stunned just as the season began.
In the interim, sporting director Guillermo Hoyos has stepped up to manage the team. Currently, Inter Miami holds a record of 3-1-3 with 12 points and is gearing up to face the Colorado Rapids in their next match.
In a statement to CBS Sports, Beckham noted that Mascherano’s departure represents a challenging chapter for the team, especially considering his role in leading them to their first MLS Cup title in 2025.
“Mascherano is an incredible individual and an outstanding coach. The team appreciated his dedication, but such situations are part of football,” Beckham reflected. “At this moment, we need to allow the dust to settle before deciding on a new head coach.”
Having taken the position in November 2024 after Gerardo Martino, Mascherano guided a talented squad that included Lionel Messi to significant achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup, reaching the Leagues Cup final, and advancing to the semifinal of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Before taking charge at Inter Miami, Mascherano had significant experience coaching Argentina's youth teams from 2021 onward, during which time the youth squads excelled in tournaments, reaching the Round of 16 at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the quarterfinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Additionally, chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will take on extra duties to aid in the club's transition.
As Inter Miami navigates this transitional period, the focus remains on ensuring stability on the field while carefully strategizing for their coaching future.
