British Columbia has recorded a total of 138 work-related fatalities in 2025, as revealed by new data from WorkSafeBC. This data raises serious concerns regarding workplace safety, particularly as occupational diseases take the lead in causing these deaths.
Among the reported fatalities, 79 were attributed to occupational diseases. A notable 36 of these deaths stemmed from asbestos exposure, highlighting the long-term health dangers present in various fields. Such diseases often develop over extended periods, amplifying the need for preventive measures and early diagnosis.
In terms of traumatic incidents, 41 deaths were caused by workplace injuries, including falls and being struck by machinery. These alarming statistics pose significant questions regarding safety standards and risk management in various high-risk domains such as construction and manufacturing.
Additionally, there were 18 fatalities resulting from work-related vehicular incidents, underlining the hazards faced by employees required to drive frequently as part of their roles. These varied categories illustrate the numerous dangers workers face across different job environments.
Despite these troubling statistics, it’s worth noting that the current figures indicate a decrease compared to previous years: from 181 fatalities in 2022 to 146 in 2024, showing a gradual positive trend.
The report also demonstrated a clear gender disparity, with men responsible for 134 of the deaths while only four women were included in the unfortified toll. This trend reflects the higher male presence in risky job sectors.
The findings were published in conjunction with the annual Day of Mourning, dedicated to honoring those who have lost their lives while on the job. Commemorative events are planned throughout the province, including at the Victoria legislature.
WorkSafeBC officials highlighted that behind these numbers lie personal narratives. They urged employers, employees, and communities to intensify efforts in enhancing safety standards to avert future tragedies.
