The government of Bangladesh is set to launch the much-anticipated Farmer Card scheme aimed at supporting farmers with financial aid and improved access to agricultural services.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will officially inaugurate the programme from Tangail on Pahela Baishakh, marking the beginning of the Bangla New Year. The initiative will initially roll out across 11 upazilas as part of a pilot phase.
Under the scheme, around 21,500 farmers will receive financial assistance through mobile banking, with each eligible farmer getting an annual incentive of Tk 2,500. The card will function like a debit card, enabling farmers to purchase essential inputs such as seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, and livestock feed.
The Farmer Card is also expected to create a comprehensive digital database of farmers, ensuring transparent distribution of subsidies and easier access to government support. Officials believe the initiative will modernize agricultural services and strengthen the rural economy.
The programme highlights Bangladesh’s push toward digital governance and efficient delivery of benefits to farmers, particularly small and marginal agricultural workers.
