The Bali chapter of National Zakat Agency has urged Muslims on the island to complete their zakat al-fitr payments ahead of Nyepi, which falls on March 19. The appeal aims to ensure that religious obligations are fulfilled without disrupting local observances on the predominantly Hindu island.
According to Bali Baznas Chairman Yunus Naim, early payment is necessary as Nyepi restricts movement, communication, and daily activities across the island. This overlap with the expected timing of Eid al-Fitr could delay the collection and distribution of zakat if not completed in advance.
Ensuring Smooth Distribution
Baznas had initially planned to complete zakat collection on the night before Eid. However, uncertainty around the exact date of Eid, combined with Nyepi restrictions, prompted authorities to revise the timeline. Early payments will allow aid to be distributed efficiently to beneficiaries without logistical disruptions.
The agency has already begun collecting zakat during Ramadan and has accelerated distribution efforts to reach those in need. Contributions include both cash and essential food supplies such as rice.
Boost To Community Support
So far, significant funds and food donations have been collected, with assistance set to benefit thousands of people across Bali, particularly in areas like Denpasar and Badung where Muslim communities are concentrated.
Officials noted that many residents are now using digital payment methods, making the process faster and more accessible.
Promoting Harmony And Awareness
Baznas emphasized that early zakat payment is not only about logistics but also about maintaining harmony between communities. Bali’s unique cultural landscape requires careful coordination between religious practices.
Authorities also highlighted the need to improve awareness about zakat obligations, especially as the Muslim population in Bali is spread out, which can affect collection efficiency.
