A North Carolina highway driver experienced an extraordinary moment when a cat unexpectedly fell through their windshield. The driver recounted to 911 that the animal was dropped from above by a bald eagle flying nearby.
This unusual event occurred on US Route 74 in Swain County, near Bryson City, adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It took place on a typical morning drive, with no inkling of the bizarre incident set to happen.
In a recorded 911 call, the driver, perplexed and shaken, recounted the incident, stating, “You might think I’m joking, but I just had a bald eagle drop a cat through my windshield.” The impact shattered the glass, leaving the driver in a state of shock.
The driver explained that they were driving normally when they suddenly noticed an object plunging toward the car. Before they could react, the cat violently struck the windshield, shattering the glass and scattering debris throughout the vehicle. Luckily, the driver emerged without any injuries.
The dispatcher worked to reassure the driver and expressed belief in their story. The driver mentioned that another motorist witnessed the eagle with the cat before the drop, calling it “the craziest thing” they had ever seen on the road.
The cat was later discovered on the roadside, sadly not surviving the impact. The driver informed the dispatcher that the animal had perished.
This peculiar incident underscores how hawks, particularly bald eagles known for their hunting prowess, can sometimes carry their prey during flight. Experts clarify that eagles might lose grip on their catch if they encounter imbalance, fear, or difficulty in holding on. In this scenario, the eagle likely released the cat while soaring over the road.
Such incidents involving bald eagles are not unheard of in the US. A notable occurrence in 2020 involved a bald eagle attacking a government drone above a Michigan lake, allegedly mistaking it for prey.
Wildlife authorities report a robust increase in the bald eagle population in the United States, now estimated at around 316,700 bald eagles. Once listed as endangered, these magnificent birds have made a remarkable recovery thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
While the driver was left shaken yet unharmed by the event on US Route 74, it stands out as one of the most unusual animal-related driving anecdotes in recent history.
