James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, the eagerly awaited third film in the Avatar franchise, has made a powerful debut at the global box office, surpassing $500 million worldwide within its first week by Christmas Day. According to Variety, the movie grossed approximately $544 million globally during its opening seven days. While this is a remarkable achievement, it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
The film’s opening weekend was notably strong, earning an estimated $347 million worldwide. Of this, $88 million came from the U.S. and Canada, with the remaining $250 million generated from international markets. These numbers make Fire and Ash the biggest holiday opener of 2025 to date, though it still trails behind the animated hit Zootopia 2.
Following the weekend, the movie maintained steady momentum, adding another $24 million domestically in the days after its debut. This pushed its total global earnings beyond the $500 million mark in just one week—an impressive feat considering the challenges currently faced by cinemas worldwide.
The film’s success is particularly notable given the tough competition from other major holiday releases such as Marty Supreme and Zootopia 2. Additionally, with cinema attendance declining due to the rise of streaming platforms and changing viewer habits, Fire and Ash’s performance stands out.
For context, Avatar: The Way of Water opened with about $134 million domestically and earned around $441 million globally in its first week. Although Fire and Ash has not yet matched those figures, it has shown strong box office resilience and remains a key contender during this competitive holiday season.
