A dramatic weather event brought the Arab Cup's third-place match to an abrupt halt as the UAE Football Association announced that the game between the UAE and Saudi Arabia was officially cancelled. Held at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, the match was abandoned after relentless storms caused significant waterlogging, rendering the pitch unsuitable for play.
Initially, the match reached halftime at a scoreless draw, but torrential rains disrupted the second half's progression. With water accumulating in critical areas of the field, officials were forced to suspend the match for over two and a half hours while approximately 100 maintenance workers attempted drainage.
Referee Cristian Garay worked alongside the match commissioner, approving two additional stoppages of 30 minutes each to see if conditions could improve. Despite the tireless efforts of stadium staff and the deployment of pumps, the ground remained too hazardous for player safety.
When officials proposed a potential resumption of the game, head coaches—Olaroiu Cosmin for the UAE and Hervé Renard for Saudi Arabia—declined, noting the substantial risk of injury under current conditions. This unified stance ultimately led to the match's cancellation, with organizers now tasked with outlining future steps.
The situation highlighted a notable oversight in tournament regulations, which lacked clear directives for handling severe weather cancellations at this juncture. Officials will not declare a draw for this match, and a replay on the next day seems highly unlikely due to the upcoming final between Jordan and Morocco.
Prior to the interruption, the teams exhibited a competitive spirit. The UAE's strategic switch to a 4-4-2 formation aimed to enhance their attack, with Bruno Oliveira and Sultan Adel playing key roles. An almost breakthrough occurred when Ali Saleh’s run down the left resulted in a close chance for Yahya Al Ghassani. Saudi Arabia also posed threats, including a disallowed goal from Salem Al Dawsari.
With both squads eager for a podium spot, the storm eliminated that opportunity. In light of unsafe conditions and absent regulatory solutions, organizers focused on player safety. An announcement regarding how third place will be determined is anticipated as officials continue their review of the incident.
