Renowned composer AR Rahman recently opened up about the trials he faced in his early life, discussing the emotional scars from a challenging upbringing. In an honest discussion, he narrated the daily struggles he witnessed growing up and how his father worked relentlessly to support the family.
He admitted that financial limitations hindered him from acquiring instruments for his first music studio, but his mother's unwavering support encouraged him to follow his passion for music. After losing his father at just nine years old, Rahman felt compelled to shoulder responsibilities to aid in sustaining their household.
Much of his childhood was spent in music studios, surrounded by seasoned musicians. He explained that he had limited opportunities for typical childhood experiences like school or friendships, which set his youth apart from that of his peers.
“I spent a lot of my childhood in studios with older musicians. Unfortunately, I didn’t indulge in school life or friendships like most kids do. Though it shaped my career, it also meant sacrificing normal childhood joys,” he reflected.
Discussing his father’s relentless work ethic, Rahman highlighted the sacrifices made for the family's wellbeing: “My father juggled three jobs to keep us afloat. It took a toll on his health, and we faced difficulties and humiliation from relatives, adding to the anguish we felt,” he recounted.
He also praised his mother as a source of immense strength, enduring hardships to care for her children. “My mother was an incredibly empowered woman. She faced many adversities to raise us on her own,” Rahman shared.
In reflecting on his formative years, Rahman acknowledged the lasting impact of his struggles, stating, “Overcoming the darkness of my past took time, but it ingrained resilience in me and colored my outlook on life.”
Currently, Rahman is garnering accolades for his work in Anand L. Rai’s upcoming film Tere Ishk Mein, featuring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon, set for release on 28 November.
Additionally, he is gearing up for a live performance at Pune's MCA Stadium on 23 November, featuring notable appearances by Aamir Khan, Boney Kapoor, Sukhwinder Singh, Chinmayi, and Hariharan.
Fans are eagerly anticipating both the film's debut and his upcoming concert, celebrating not just his musical genius, but the inspiring journey that propelled him to international acclaim.
