Academy Award winner Anne Hathaway steps into the limelight as a renowned pop icon in the highly anticipated film Mother Mary. This narrative delves into the profound and emotional dynamics between two estranged friends.

In this role, Hathaway embodies Mother Mary, a celebrated pop star on the verge of a comeback following an enigmatic event. Desperate for guidance, she travels to England, where she reunites with fashion designer Sam Anselm, portrayed by Michaela Coel, in a cozy countryside studio after a decade apart.

Their encounter rekindles a whirlwind of feelings, bringing forth past anguish, resentment, and cherished memories of their once inseparable bond, while also uncovering remnants of their shared history.

Hathaway disclosed her rigorous preparation for the role, which included nearly eight hours of dance rehearsal daily for several months. Additionally, she dedicated a full year to hone her vocal skills. The actress credits global superstar Beyoncé as a source of inspiration and committed herself entirely to this new challenge.

“I aimed to do more than just deliver a good performance; I was determined to give my all,” Hathaway expressed at the London premiere, reflecting on her character’s battles with fame and personal identity.

The film, written and directed by David Lowery and produced by A24, features an original score by Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff, and FKA Twigs. Hathaway contributes her vocals to seven tracks on the soundtrack titled Mother Mary: Greatest Hits.

Director David Lowery commended Hathaway’s unwavering dedication, noting her efforts in crafting music that resonates emotionally and authentically.

Mother Mary is set to premiere in theaters across the US and the UK on Friday.
