Adelaide, Australia: In a striking performance, 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva clinched her fourth WTA Tour title by overpowering fellow teen Victoria Mboko 6-3, 6-1 in the Adelaide International final on Saturday.
The rising star from Russia, who previously secured consecutive WTA 1000 titles in Dubai and Indian Wells last year, is set to clash with Paris Olympics silver medalist Donna Vekic in the opening round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
Mboko, aged 19, made a strong start, taking a 3-0 lead in the first set. Nonetheless, Andreeva rallied back, winning the next six games to seize the first set. The second set was dominated by Andreeva as she broke early, taking the first three games, before concluding the match with her serve.
In the post-match ceremony, Andreeva humorously acknowledged her achievement, attributing her success to her hard work, courage, and mental resilience, as well as the support of her coach, former world number two Conchita Martinez.
Victoria Mboko, representing Canada, had to take a medical timeout during the match. The world number 17 achieved a remarkable feat last year by becoming the youngest player since Serena Williams to defeat four major champions on her way to winning the Canadian Open. She is set to face Australian Emerson Jones in the opening round at Melbourne Park.
In the men's final at Adelaide, Czech player Tomas Machac triumphed over France’s Ugo Humbert with a score of 6-4, 6-7(2), 6-2.
Meanwhile, in Auckland, Jakub Mensik secured his second ATP title by defeating Sebastian Baez 6-3, 7-6(7). This triumph follows his victory at the Miami Open last year, where he notably bested his mentor, Novak Djokovic, in the final. Mensik will take on Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta in the first round of the Australian Open, while Baez is set to compete against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
Additionally, in Hobart, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto claimed her first WTA title since 2023, overcoming American Iva Jovic 6-4, 6-4 in a preparatory tournament for the Australian Open.
