Carlos Alcaraz battled through pain and resilience to edge out Alexander Zverev in an intense five-set showdown at Rod Laver Arena. The 22-year-old Spaniard struggled with a right thigh issue midway through the third set but used his exceptional shot placement and precise ball-striking to stay in the match.
After a tightly contested opening set, Alcaraz capitalized on a crucial double fault from Zverev to claim the first set. Despite Zverev's strong response, building a 5-2 lead in the second, Alcaraz clawed back to force a tiebreak, where he increased his intensity to take a commanding lead.
The match turned physically challenging as Alcaraz’s thigh pain worsened, forcing a medical timeout that sparked controversy from Zverev, who questioned the treatment under the rules. Undeterred, Alcaraz pushed through the discomfort, holding serve and taking a swig of pickle juice to revive himself.
Zverev claimed the third set tiebreak, but Alcaraz’s determination saw him force a fourth set tiebreak, where Zverev’s powerful serving kept the match alive. In the decisive fifth set, Zverev initially broke early, but Alcaraz regained his rhythm with impressive court coverage and stunning winners.
The Spaniard broke Zverev in the 10th game, as the crowd roared in approval, sealing a hard-fought victory in the first five-set battle on centre court this year. Alcaraz now prepares to face either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner in Sunday’s final, where a win would complete his collection of major titles.
