Major Airlines Halt Middle East Flights Amid Rising Tensions

Major Airlines Halt Middle East Flights Amid Rising Tensions

Post by : Meena Ariff

International airlines have started suspending flights to the Middle East as tensions escalate between the United States and Iran. Major carriers such as KLM, Lufthansa, and Air France have temporarily halted services to key destinations including Dubai, Riyadh, and Tel Aviv.

Air France announced it will suspend flights to Dubai, citing safety concerns over the volatile geopolitical situation. Dutch airline KLM also paused flights to destinations requiring entry into the airspace of Iran, Iraq, Israel, and neighboring Gulf countries. Lufthansa has restricted its operations to daytime flights while avoiding Iranian airspace entirely. North American carriers, including United Airlines and Air Canada, have also canceled flights to Tel Aviv.

The disruptions follow growing fears of a potential military confrontation between the US and Iran. US President Donald Trump recently confirmed that a significant naval force is moving toward Iran as a precaution, despite earlier statements downplaying the likelihood of immediate military action. The White House noted that Iran had temporarily paused executions of protesters following widespread unrest, but US military movements continue in preparation for possible escalation.

The US fleet en route to the Gulf includes the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and multiple guided-missile destroyers. Analysts warn that the deployment raises the risk of regional conflict, prompting airlines to reassess flight routes to ensure passenger safety.

Civil aviation authorities have also highlighted missile and drone threats in the region. Iran temporarily closed its airspace for over four hours last week, affecting flights from around the world, signaling how quickly tensions can impact global air travel.

Travelers planning to visit Israel or Gulf nations are advised to check with airlines for updated schedules and alternative routes. The aviation industry continues to closely monitor the situation to avoid risks to passenger safety while maintaining essential air services.
