On Monday, Air India declared plans to recommence flights from New Delhi to China starting February 2026, marking nearly six years since operations were halted. The airline also intends to introduce a new Mumbai–Shanghai route next year, pending the necessary regulatory approvals.
This revival comes amid a general thaw in India-China aviation connections, highlighted by Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport’s recent announcement regarding resuming flights between the two nations. Air India stated that this move signifies an increase in diplomatic engagement and trade collaboration.
“The return of Air India’s flights to Shanghai aligns with recent diplomatic agreements between India and China that have reinstated air travel suspended in early 2020,” the airline mentioned in a statement.
This initiative follows Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to China earlier this year, his first in seven years, where he attended a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting. During discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, they reiterated that both nations are development partners and engaged in talks to bolster trade ties amidst global market challenges.
The reintroduction of direct flights is anticipated to enhance business, tourism, and cultural exchanges, in addition to revitalizing bilateral trade that has faced many obstacles. Travel analysts highlight that this renewed air connectivity will offer Indian businesses critical opportunities to tap into the Chinese market, and vice versa.
Air India’s planned resumption is a significant aspect of its broader strategy to amplify international connectivity. Officials stressed that prioritizing safety protocols, regulatory compliance, and operational efficacy will be essential as services restart.
Industry analysts view this initiative as a constructive sign for regional diplomacy, illustrating both India and China’s readiness to move past previous tensions and concentrate on common economic and developmental objectives.
With commercial and diplomatic avenues reopening, travelers can look forward to enhanced travel options between the two nations by early 2026, marking a pivotal moment in the civil aviation relations between India and China.
