New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched an investigation into the uncommanded deployment of the emergency turbine, known as the Ram Air Turbine (RAT), on an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft. The flight, AI 117, was operating from Amritsar to Birmingham and landed safely in Birmingham without any reported issues.
The Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small fan-like emergency system that deploys automatically when an aircraft loses power, usually in rare situations where all engines stop functioning. The RAT generates emergency electrical and hydraulic power using the incoming air.
Air India confirmed that all electrical and hydraulic systems were functioning normally after landing. Following standard operating procedures, the aircraft has been grounded for a thorough inspection to ensure passenger safety.

According to the DGCA, the RAT deployed when the aircraft was at just 400 feet above the ground while preparing to land in Birmingham. The pilot did not report any abnormal situations, and the plane landed safely. Boeing, the manufacturer of the Dreamliner 787-8, has submitted a report and confirmed that maintenance actions recommended for uncommanded RAT deployment were carried out. The report stated no discrepancies were observed, and the aircraft is structurally and functionally fit for continued service.
The DGCA’s Air Safety Department will conduct a detailed investigation, and an officer from the Directorate of Air Safety has been assigned to probe the incident.
It is notable that this particular model of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was earlier involved in the Ahmedabad plane crash in June this year. During that incident, the RAT also deployed after a fuel supply cutoff led to engine shutdowns, activating the emergency system. The interim probe report highlighted the technical reasons behind the deployment at that time.
The DGCA’s current investigation will aim to determine why the emergency turbine deployed uncommanded mid-air on AI 117, ensuring that all safety measures are reinforced and passengers remain secure on Air India flights.
