Perikatan Nasional has officially appointed Kemaman MP Datuk Seri Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar as the new Opposition Leader in Malaysia’s Parliament. The announcement was made following the coalition’s supreme council meeting held in Kuala Lumpur.
Ahmad Samsuri, who also serves as the Menteri Besar of Terengganu and chairman of Perikatan Nasional, replaces Larut MP Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin. Hamzah was removed from his position as Bersatu deputy president earlier this year.
The decision was confirmed by Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan through an official statement after the coalition meeting. Political observers described the move as an important step in strengthening the opposition alliance ahead of future elections.
Perikatan Nasional also indicated that it is open to forming electoral cooperation or political pacts with parties that share similar goals and interests. Leaders said such cooperation could help strengthen opposition unity in the next general election.
During the meeting, the coalition also announced new state leadership appointments for several regions across Malaysia. Senior leaders were assigned responsibilities to prepare party machinery and political strategies in their respective states.
Analysts believe Ahmad Samsuri’s appointment may help improve coordination within the opposition bloc due to his growing popularity and administrative experience in Terengganu. His leadership style is viewed as moderate and strategic by many supporters.
The question of who would become the next Opposition Leader had remained uncertain since Hamzah Zainuddin’s removal earlier this year. The latest decision is expected to provide greater stability within Perikatan Nasional’s parliamentary leadership.
Political analysts also noted that discussions about possible electoral cooperation signal that opposition parties are already preparing strategies for Malaysia’s upcoming political contests and future parliamentary challenges.
