The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has stopped the bidding process for the 2031 and 2035 Asian Cup tournaments. This decision comes after discussions about possible changes in the global football calendar.
The AFC is considering shifting the tournament schedule, which could affect how future competitions are planned. Because of this, the organization has decided to pause the bidding process to review its overall calendar.
Officials said the move will help create a more clear and structured plan for selecting future host countries. The decision will also allow better coordination with international football schedules.
Several countries had already shown interest in hosting the tournaments. For the 2031 Asian Cup, countries like Australia, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, and South Korea had submitted bids. There was also a joint bid from Central Asian countries.
For the 2035 tournament, countries including Australia, Japan, South Korea, and Kuwait had expressed interest.
The AFC Asian Cup is one of the biggest football tournaments in Asia and is usually held every four years. The next edition is scheduled to take place in Saudi Arabia in 2027, with Qatar as the current champion.
Overall, the AFC’s decision aims to ensure better planning and alignment with global football events before moving forward with future tournaments.
