Abu Dhabi, UAE – Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has received a patent for its groundbreaking AI-driven multilingual sign language translation app, HearMe, aimed at improving communication for individuals with hearing impairments across various regions.
The innovative platform was created by Dr. Modafar Ati, an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Information Technology at ADU, along with alumna Reem Al Bostami, who holds a degree in Information Technology. HearMe is aligned with the UAE's National Policy for Empowering People of Determination, emphasizing equity, digital literacy, and accessibility.
This app offers real-time bidirectional translation between sign language and text, effectively converting signed gestures into written words and vice versa. HearMe is compatible with several sign languages including American Sign Language and French Sign Language, thus fostering cross-cultural communication and dismantling linguistic barriers.
“AI and technology should deliver tangible solutions that create a significant social impact,” remarked Dr. Modafar Ati. “HearMe enhances the participation of individuals with hearing impairments in both academic and professional settings, showcasing ADU's commitment to inclusion, accessibility, and sustainable development.”
The application is tailored to enhance inclusive learning and career pathways, enabling those with hearing impairments to engage fully in higher education, vocational training, and workplace interactions.
In its ongoing efforts to champion accessibility, ADU has initiated programs like HearMe and the Inclusion Advocates of Tomorrow initiative, which is in collaboration with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma’an, Zayed Authority for People of Determination, and Key2enable. These initiatives echo ADU's Vision 2027, which integrates inclusion, innovation, and community impact into its academic and research endeavors.
