A Namibian politician named Adolf Hitler Uunona is preparing to win another local election in his home country. Uunona, 59, has represented the Ompundja constituency in the northern Oshana region since 2004 and is a member of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO) party. Despite the controversial similarity of his name to the former German leader, Uunona remains a popular local figure.
He has repeatedly clarified that he has no connection to Adolf Hitler, the Nazi dictator responsible for the Holocaust. Uunona explained that his father gave him the name, but it does not reflect his character or beliefs. He told local and international media that he only learned about Hitler’s history later in life and has nothing to do with his actions.
In public, Uunona usually omits “Hitler” when using his name and even his wife calls him “Adolf.” He has no plans to change his official name, which appears on all legal documents.
Namibia was once a German colony, which explains why names like Adolf remain relatively common. Uunona has maintained his political popularity, winning the 2020 election with 85 percent of the vote. Despite his unusual name, he focuses on serving his community and avoiding any association with historical events related to Nazi Germany.
Even incidents like a car spotted in his region displaying the name “Adolf Hitler” with a Nazi swastika have not affected him, as he insists he is not linked to such actions. Uunona’s case highlights how a controversial name does not define a person’s character or public service in Namibia.
