ADNOC has introduced Taurob’s advanced inspector robot at its Taweelah Gas Compression Plant, tasked with conducting inspections in hazardous settings without endangering workers.
This AI-enhanced robot is actively in use, serving as the primary inspection tool to aid ADNOC engineers in identifying potential gas leaks, abnormal hotspots, and varied safety concerns. Built for extreme industrial environments, it features cutting-edge technology such as 3D LiDAR sensors and thermal cameras, offering complete 360-degree visibility.
This deployment aligns with ADNOC’s broader mission to elevate industrial safety, minimize operational risks, and broaden the implementation of AI and robotics within its energy endeavors.
Furthermore, ADNOC has revealed intentions to create the energy sector’s first heavy-duty “operator” robot via the ARGOS Joint Industry Project. Collaborating with firms and organizations like Equinor, Petrobras, TotalEnergies, Saft, Taurob, and the Net Zero Technology Centre, the project is set to be transformative.
Distinct from the current inspection robot, the future operator robot will undertake not just inspections, but also engage in physical industrial operations, such as lifting heavy machinery, manipulating valves, and adjusting gauges in perilous environments.
Designed to function within a temperature range of -20°C to 60°C, the robot will operate both autonomously and via remote controls, with ADNOC anticipating its operational readiness by late 2026.
Dena Almansoori, ADNOC’s Group Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, emphasized the significance of integrating artificial and physical intelligence into the company’s long-term energy strategy. Advanced robotics at the Taweelah facility are already enhancing safety, lowering emissions, and improving overall efficiency.
Matthias Biegl, the Managing Director of Taurob, acknowledged ADNOC’s vital role in the ARGOS project, noting that the company’s expertise in the challenging Middle Eastern conditions has significantly benefited the development of safety-oriented industrial robotics technologies.
Additionally, ADNOC's AI-based safety platform, HSE Cockpit.ai, has reportedly decreased safety incidents by 30% through real-time monitoring and risk assessment. The company is also utilizing robots and drones for inspections, emissions surveillance, and emergency response in diverse environments.
These innovations signify ADNOC’s ongoing commitment to bolstering industrial safety and expediting the incorporation of AI and robotics throughout the energy landscape.
