In the early hours of Friday, residents across Pakistan felt the tremors of a 5.2 magnitude earthquake. The quake, recorded at a depth of 135 kilometers, caused momentary alarm but thankfully no significant casualties or damage have been reported.
This earthquake originated in a seismically active region, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. The area, encompassing parts of Afghanistan, northern India, and Pakistan, regularly experiences seismic events owing to the movement of these colossal plates. The collision contributes to Pakistan's heightened risk for significant earthquakes.
Quakes that occur near the Earth’s surface tend to pose greater risks, as the energy released is more intense. However, the recent quake's depth of 135 km means it is classified as relatively deep, thereby lessening its potential destructive effects.
Certain provinces are particularly vulnerable; Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan sit along the southern perimeter of the Eurasian plate, while Punjab and Sindh rest on the northwest side of the Indian plate. Notably, Balochistan is situated close to the fault line between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, increasing the likelihood of earthquakes. Even regions like Sindh, which are traditionally less prone to seismic activity, remain at risk due to their geological positioning.
Local authorities are actively monitoring the situation and have advised citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to safety protocols during seismic events. Experts stress the importance of earthquake preparedness in Pakistan, where historical data shows a pattern of moderate to strong earthquakes along significant fault lines.
