Abu Dhabi Unveils 11 New Guidelines for Safer Hazardous Materials Management

Abu Dhabi Unveils 11 New Guidelines for Safer Hazardous Materials Management

Post by : Badri Ariffin

In a commendable initiative, the Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre has rolled out 11 new guidelines aimed at ensuring the safe management of hazardous materials, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council.

This move is a significant advancement in bolstering the emirate's safety framework, increasing environmental protection levels, and standardizing regulations to meet international best practices.

Designed to enhance workforce preparedness across various sectors, the guidelines address every phase of hazardous materials handling—from storage to transportation and final disposal. The goal is to curtail risks, elevate operational efficiency, and safeguard the environment.

His Excellency Khalfan Abdullah Khalfan Al Mansoori, Acting Director General of the Centre, remarked that these guidelines adhere to the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), Revision 11. Notably, Abu Dhabi is the first to implement this updated version, underscoring its commitment to global safety and regulatory standards.

He highlighted that having defined technical standards fosters a transparent regulatory landscape that enhances investor trust and stimulates private sector growth. The Centre is dedicated to ongoing updates that reflect global trends and spur innovation.

His Excellency Eng Fahad Ghareeb Al Shamsi, Acting Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, called this initiative a pivotal step toward cultivating a cohesive safety and quality infrastructure. He pointed out that harmonizing regulations with international benchmarks improves compliance, fosters coordination among stakeholders, and boosts overall operational efficacy.

The guidelines lay out a clear regulatory structure that translates legal requirements into actionable procedures. They effectively delineate roles, responsibilities, and oversight protocols to guarantee compliance in sectors managing hazardous materials.

Spanning across all phases—importing, exporting, storage, manufacturing, packaging, trading, recycling, and final disposal—the guidelines also encompass classification, labelling, and safety data requirements.

This initiative reinforces Abu Dhabi's unwavering commitment to safety, environmental sustainability, and proactive risk management, solidifying its status as a frontrunner in regulatory excellence and ecological responsibility.
