The investigation into the sudden death of legendary Assamese singer Zubeen Garg has reached a critical stage, with Singapore authorities confirming India’s request for legal assistance in the case. Zubeen Garg, aged 52, died on September 19 in Singapore while visiting to perform at the North East India Festival. His death, which reportedly occurred while he was swimming, has raised several questions and sparked widespread speculation about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Special DGP of Assam, MP Gupta, who heads the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case, said that the Attorney-General’s Office of Singapore will now consider India’s request. This marks a significant step for investigators who are following leads tied to Garg’s final days in Singapore.
The SIT has also intensified its investigation into overseas links connected to the case. A second notice has been sent to ten Singapore-based NRIs who have yet to appear for questioning despite earlier summons. Investigators are tracking communications, financial transactions, and travel records of individuals who were in contact with Garg before his death.
Meanwhile, the long-awaited viscera report of Zubeen Garg, prepared by the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), has been handed over to a medical committee at Guwahati Medical College. The committee will now prepare the final post-mortem report, which is expected to play a decisive role in determining the exact cause of death. Gupta added that the report, once finalized, will be submitted to the court.
In a related development, two of Garg’s personal security officers have been arrested, raising the total number of arrests in connection with the case to five. Those already in custody include Garg’s cousin Sandipan Garg, his manager Siddhartha Sharma, musician Shekharjyoti Goswami, singer Amritprava Mahanta, and North East India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta. Over 60 FIRs have been filed across Assam against some of the accused. The Assam Chief Minister directed the DGP to consolidate all FIRs, which led to the formation of the SIT by the CID.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the BJP government for taking swift action in the investigation. “People are demanding justice for Zubeen Garg, and we are doing everything possible to ensure it,” Sarma said. He also compared the government’s fast response in this case to delays following the death of another famed singer, Bhupen Hazarika, during the Congress rule, stating that the BJP acted promptly to address the matter.
The investigation continues on both domestic and international fronts, with authorities examining all possible angles to ensure a thorough and transparent probe into Zubeen Garg’s death.
