Search and rescue efforts for 32 people still missing after a devastating landslide in West Java, Indonesia, were severely hindered on Wednesday morning due to persistent heavy rainfall, the country’s disaster mitigation agency reported. The landslide struck Pasir Langu village in the Bandung Barat region early on Saturday, following a day of intense rain that caused the earth to give way.
Pasir Langu is situated in a mountainous and hilly area approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia. The force of the landslide was so powerful that it swept through homes and infrastructure, leaving widespread destruction in its path. Rescue teams have been working around the clock since the incident, battling not only the difficult terrain but also the ongoing adverse weather conditions which have slowed down search operations.
As of now, the disaster has claimed the lives of 34 individuals, and efforts continue to find the 32 people who remain missing. Local authorities and disaster response units are coordinating closely to reach isolated areas affected by the landslide, using specialized equipment and personnel to search for survivors and recover those lost.
The community in Pasir Langu and surrounding areas is grappling with the emotional and physical toll of the tragedy. Relief efforts are underway to provide emergency aid, including food, shelter, and medical assistance to survivors and families affected by the disaster. Officials have warned that continued rainfall may increase the risk of further landslides, urging residents to stay vigilant and follow safety guidelines.
This landslide is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by heavy rains in Indonesia’s hilly regions, where unstable soil and deforestation can increase vulnerability to such natural disasters. Authorities are calling for heightened awareness and improved disaster preparedness to prevent future tragedies in vulnerable communities.
