Vietnam is moving forward with a strong push to develop biotechnology into a key economic and technical sector following a new directive issued by Deputy Prime Minister Ho Quoc Dung. The policy aims to strengthen the role of biotechnology in supporting national development and defense.
The directive highlights that Vietnam has already made notable progress in biotechnology, with advancements in agriculture, healthcare, and environmental applications. However, challenges remain, including slow implementation, limited investment efficiency, and weak connections between research, production, and market systems.
The government has emphasized the need for stronger leadership and accountability across ministries and local authorities to accelerate the development process. Officials have been instructed to review existing policies and ensure timely execution of assigned tasks to meet national goals.
A major focus of the directive is to prioritize investment in core and strategic technologies within biotechnology. The government plans to encourage both public and private sector participation to build a strong innovation ecosystem and develop high value products.
Vietnam also aims to enhance its capacity for technological self reliance, particularly in the production of vaccines, biological medicines, and advanced medical technologies. This effort is expected to reduce dependence on imports and improve national healthcare capabilities.
In addition, the directive calls for the development of biotechnology applications in agriculture, including the creation of high yield and climate resilient crops, as well as environmentally sustainable practices such as recycling agricultural by products and promoting circular farming models.
The government is also focusing on building a skilled workforce in biotechnology by improving education and training programs and strengthening collaboration between universities, research institutions, and businesses.
Overall, the directive represents a comprehensive strategy to transform biotechnology into a major driver of economic growth, innovation, and sustainability, while supporting Vietnam’s long term development vision.
