This week on Wall Street, the initial buoyance gave way to declines, as US stock indices fell sharply despite promising earnings and hiring data. Investors leaned on hopeful reports from tech powerhouse Nvidia and retail giant Walmart, along with a modest uptick in home sales, but the optimism proved temporary. The market retreated, reflecting persistent uncertainty.
The S&P 500 dipped by 1.5%, the Dow Jones decreased by 0.8%, while the Nasdaq saw a decline exceeding 2% on Thursday. Asian markets followed suit, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 down 2.5% in the afternoon session, South Korea’s Kospi losing about 4%, and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng falling close to 2%.
Despite an initial surge in Nvidia shares following solid earnings reports, they retreated by over 3%. In South Korea, major chip manufacturers SK Hynix and Samsung recorded losses of 8% and 6%, respectively. Throughout November, the Nasdaq has faced challenges, marking its weakest period yet as anxieties over a possible AI-induced market bubble continue.
In parallel, Bitcoin has dropped below $90,000, reaching its lowest point since April, underscoring the impact of tech sector uncertainties on global markets. Analysts note growing worries about overvaluation among the so-called “Magnificent Seven” tech leaders—Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, and their peers—have heightened investor vigilance. These firms account for approximately one-third of the S&P 500, leading to a concentration in market growth.
Moreover, mixed signals from the economy have compounded the overall atmosphere of uncertainty. Job postings in September resulted in 119,000 new positions, surpassing projections, yet the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 4.4%. Investors are now anxious over postponed inflation reports, which could sway the Federal Reserve's interest rate strategies into 2026.
The confluence of excitement surrounding AI, concentrated technology expansion, and inflation ambiguities has propelled market volatility. Stocks are reacting to not just the surface-level corporate achievements but also to deeper, structural challenges, including growth pace, interest rate paths, and the sustainability of current tech valuations.
In this shifting landscape, experts advise that while market adjustments are inevitable, the next few weeks will be crucial in assessing whether the recent downturns indicate a fleeting setback or signal deeper market apprehensions.
