A wave of online fraud is sweeping through social media and messaging apps, enticing users with bogus OTT subscription packages for platforms like Netflix, **Amazon Prime Video, and JioHotstar for just ₹299. Experts in cybersecurity caution that these offers are completely fraudulent and can lead to severe financial consequences, including bank hacking and theft of personal information.
Fraudsters are sending messages claiming premium OTT subscriptions are available at unbelievably low prices or even “lifetime access” deals. These promotions are primarily shared via WhatsApp forwards, Instagram ads, and dubious links. Users are prompted to pay ₹299 to activate what appears to be a legitimate subscription.
When users click on the link, they are taken to fake sites mimicking official OTT platforms. Upon entering their card details, UPI PIN, or net banking information, scammers quickly access sensitive financial data. In many instances, users are also tricked into installing unfamiliar apps that covertly harvest personal data from their devices.
Cybersecurity experts affirm that no legitimate streaming service provides bundled subscriptions for Netflix, Prime Video, and JioHotstar at such a low price. These companies have consistent subscription plans and never offer unrealistic bundled deals. Thus, any such bargain is a significant red flag for fraud.
Victims can face various financial and personal threats, including unauthorized transactions, UPI fraud, misuse of debit or credit cards, identity theft, and the loss of sensitive personal data. In some cases, entire bank accounts can be looted within minutes of sharing information.
Users should refrain from clicking on unknown or dubious links, avoid sharing banking or card information on unverified websites, and always check offers only through official sources. It's also crucial to avoid downloading apps from unofficial sources and to report suspicious messages to cybercrime authorities as soon as possible.
Authorities are raising alarms about the rapid increase in these OTT subscription scams, as fraudsters leverage appealing pricing to ensnare users. The scams primarily target those seeking affordable entertainment and employ urgency-driven tactics to prompt hasty decisions without proper verification.
Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and JioHotstar are integral for entertainment, but vigilance against fake subscription offers is essential. A ₹299 “comprehensive OTT package” is almost always a fraudulent scheme aimed at extracting money and personal details. Always confirm offers through official channels before proceeding with any payment.
