In a significant decision, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has elected five nations to take on roles as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, a term set to commence on January 1, 2027, and conclude by December 31, 2028.
The countries newly elected to these positions are Austria, Kyrgyzstan, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe. This election was conducted on June 3 at the UN headquarters, with each nation securing a seat aligned with its designated regional group.
Austria and Portugal captured the two spots reserved for the Western European and Other States Group. Kyrgyzstan earned its position as a representative of the Asia-Pacific Group, while Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe were elected from the Latin American and Caribbean Group and the African Group, respectively.
This election is historic for Kyrgyzstan, marking its first term on the UN Security Council since joining the United Nations in 1992.
Austria and Portugal each have a history of serving on the Security Council thrice in the past. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe's participation includes two prior terms, and Trinidad and Tobago has held a seat once before.
These five nations will take over from Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia, who will finish their terms at the end of 2026.
The UN Security Council is comprised of 15 members, which includes five permanent members with veto power—Russia, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, alongside ten non-permanent members who are elected by the General Assembly for staggered two-year terms.
These newly elected nations are set to officially begin their duties on the Security Council come January 1, 2027.
