The UAE National Identity Committee, led by Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, convened for its inaugural meeting to evaluate significant projects under the UAE’s National Identity Strategy.
Throughout the meeting, the committee unveiled the National Register of Modern Heritage and assessed the National Identity Values Narrative Guide. These efforts are focused on fortifying Emirati identity, safeguarding cultural heritage, and fostering common values within the populace.
Key components of the National Identity Strategy, ratified last year, were also discussed by the committee. This strategy encompasses 25 vital sectors, including education, media, culture, economy, family, and society, targeting to amplify the role of national identity in all developmental phases across the UAE.
Sheikha Mariam emphasized that national identity transcends mere concept; it embodies a living experience manifested in daily practices, language, traditions, and societal contributions. She underscored the significance of family, education, and the values imparted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan in the development of Emirati identity.
She further highlighted the necessity of transforming the National Identity Strategy into actionable priorities with quantifiable outcomes, balancing tradition and innovation, diversity and unity, and ambition and humility.
A pivotal announcement from the meeting was the introduction of the National Register of Modern Heritage. This initiative aims to catalog and preserve culturally significant structures and locations throughout the UAE, particularly those established post-1960s. The initiative seeks to safeguard national memory for future generations.
Additionally, the committee reviewed the National Identity Values Narrative Guide, intended to offer a cohesive framework for delineating Emirati identity and values. This guide will assist government bodies in formulating policies and programs that align with national identity objectives.
Discussions also encompassed updates on the National Identity Index, a mechanism created to gauge public understanding, pride, and involvement with national identity. This index is anticipated to enhance the assessment of forthcoming initiatives and fortify social harmony among citizens and residents.
An interactive exhibition accompanied the meeting, highlighting the UAE’s National Identity Strategy through four principal themes, which included Emirati identity values, strategic goals, cultural traits, and the National Register of Modern Heritage.
Several prominent UAE officials participated in the meeting, such as Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, Dr Sultan bin Saif Al Neyadi, and Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed.
The National Identity Committee plays a pivotal role in overseeing the UAE’s National Identity Strategy, synchronizing efforts among various sectors, and ensuring the effective execution of initiatives that strengthen national belonging and preserve Emirati cultural heritage.
