In a significant development for electric urban air transport, the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the UAE has pushed forward plans to deploy the Archer Midnight eVTOL aircraft in the region.
Archer Aviation proudly becomes the first electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) manufacturer to gain entry into the GCAA’s Restricted Type Certificate programme. This achievement permits selective commercial operations while adhering to rigorous safety and compliance standards, ensuring the aircraft’s readiness for extended use in the UAE.
This advancement comes after years of collaborative efforts between the regulatory body and Archer Aviation. The relationship includes numerous technical evaluations at Archer's facilities in the United States, as well as successful test flights conducted within the UAE.
As part of the certification journey, the GCAA has also initiated vital approvals like Design Organization Approval and Production Organization Approval, underlining its trust in Archer Aviation’s engineering practices and safety frameworks.
Aqeel Al Zarooni, Assistant Director-General for Aviation Safety Affairs at GCAA, stated that the authority is committed to the seamless integration of cutting-edge aviation technologies into the UAE's airspace.
The programme has advanced through eight primary workstreams, covering all aspects from aircraft certification and operations to flight crew training, regulatory oversight, and security measures.
The Midnight eVTOL is anticipated to kick off its initial operations in Abu Dhabi in collaboration with local provider Abu Dhabi Aviation. The design aims to enhance short-distance urban mobility and significantly trim travel times across the city.
This initiative signifies a meaningful stride towards the UAE achieving its ambition to become a leading hub for the next generation of aviation and advanced air mobility.
